Minute English

« Make hay while the sun shines »

« Make hay while the sun shines »

The meaning is: to make the most of one’s opportunities while you have the chance. If you have an opportunity to do something, do it before the opportunity expires.

In French, we would translate it as « saisir sa chance au vol » or « battre le fer quand il est chaud » . Respectively and literally meaning « grab its chance while flying » and « to strike while the iron is hot »! (it always amuses me when an expression is translated word for word in another language!)

We know how life goes, it offers favorable opportunities but does not last an eternity, so, we shall stay alert and make hay while the sun shines!

What is the translation in your own language?
